Chateau in Ruins

Local Control Lost in France

In 2016, we embarked on a transformative project to restore a 19th-century Chateau in France perched above a charming village to save it from ruin and help reinvigorate the adjacent village. The Chateau, once grand but now ravaged by neglect, stood as a poignant symbol of faded splendor, with crumbling walls and a touch of dark mold marring its once elegant facade.

Our vision encompassed revitalizing not just the Chateau but the entire village, envisioning a multifaceted venue for weddings, fundraisers, tours, and cultural events. However, our efforts faced a significant challenge when a neighboring entity proposed constructing colossal windmills near the Chateau, threatening to overshadow its beauty and disrupt its serenity.

Despite this obstacle, we remained steadfast in our commitment to invest $5,000,000 in the Chateau's restoration. Through collaborative discussions with the village councilors, we advocated for the preservation of the Chateau's historic charm and its economic potential as a local heritage site. With overwhelming community support, we successfully secured backing for the restoration project, marking a triumph of unity and shared vision.

Amidst our restoration endeavors, we had the pleasure of celebrating a remarkable lady's 90th birthday at the Chateau. As a former maid at the Chateau and her partner, a former farmer, joined in the festivities, their presence added a touch of nostalgia and warmth to the occasion.

Our commitment to community engagement extended to hosting fundraisers for various local organizations, including sports clubs and educational institutions. Additionally, we introduced young campers to the magic of camping in the forest and the joy of making s'mores around the campfire, fostering a love for nature and camaraderie among the youth.

The Chateau's open house drew an impressive crowd of 3000 visitors, showcasing the restored grandeur of the property and raising over 4000 euros in support of the local historical society. This successful event underscored our shared dedication to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the region.

As years passed, the Chateau became a vibrant hub for community events, enriching the cultural tapestry of the village. However, unexpected challenges arose when plans to install the wind turbines in the same place as before threatened the Chateau's serenity. Despite our efforts to uphold the village's earlier decision, we were met with resistance, compelling us to make the difficult decision to sell the Chateau.

Finding solace in a new abode at the "Irish Rose Cottage" in Carmel-by-the-Sea, we embraced a new chapter guided by the lessons learned in community preservation and advocacy for local autonomy. Our experiences underscored the importance of standing up for democratic principles and the preservation of cherished community values, inspiring us to champion the unique character of Carmel-by-the-Sea and its historic legacy.
